What is this programme about?
In 2011, as part of the government’s efforts to provide for the homeless and vulnerable poor, the National Welfare Foundation (Yayasan Kebajikan Negara) established temporary shelters, Anjung Singgah, in urban areas. Currently, there are five centres which provide shelter and food for a maximum period of two weeks and employment opportunities to the homeless. These transit shelters only accept Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above.
In a survey conducted by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur) in 2016, the number of homeless people in the city has seen a significant increase. In 2014, the number stood at 600, in 2016, the figure was closer to 2,000.
