What is this programme about?
The Programme to Rehabilitate Malnourished Children (PPKZM) was launched in 1989. It is a government initiative to improve the health and nutritional status of children aged 6 months to below 6 years of age of hardcore poor families. This scheme provides food assistance to eligible children to help them obtain a balanced and nutritious diet to enable them to achieve optimal physical and mental growth. A fully subsidised food package of 13 basic essential foods is given to these children. This package consists of rice, breakfast cereals, biscuits, margarine, eggs, multivitamins, sardines, anchovies, rice noodles, chocolate malt powder, cooking oil, full cream powdered milk and special milk for weight gain.
Children under this programme are also provided with free healthcare services such as medical treatment if they suffer from any illness, immunisation and proper health education and guidance.
The National Registry System PPKZM was also developed in 2011 as a database of these malnourished children (KZM) to ensure proper monitoring of the programme and the children to ensure effective, and efficient delivery of the programme.
