What is this programme about?  

Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) is an annual living wage aid given to low-income and vulnerable households and senior citizens earning less than RM4,000 a month. Individuals earning less than RM2,000 a month are also eligible to apply.  


This financial assistance scheme, first introduced in 2012, is given to aid low-income households and individuals to help them cope with the rising cost of living.  Initially, this initiative was introduced as a form of targeted-subsidy to help recipients reduce the burden of GST.

 

BR1M is now given to at least half of all Malaysian households.

According to the Finance Ministry, a total of 6,320,769 applications were approved for BR1M 2017. Under BR1M 2017, RM1,200 was given to each of the 3,242,048 households approved recipients (approximately half of Malaysian households) earning RM3,000 and less a month.
The government also approved applications by 291,918 lower-middle-income households earning between RM3,001 and RM4,000 a month who receives an annual amount of RM900. Low-income individuals earning less than RM2,000 a month, 2,786,803 individuals in total, received RM450 for BR1M 2017.

The amount of aid given out per recipient differs according to the monthly income of the applicant.  The schedule of allocation ensures that the lowest income group, E-Kasih registered and B40 households receive the most, while individual recipients receive the least and in only one payment a year.  The amount and disbursement instalments are in the Table shown:

Other benefits for successful BR1M applicants

  • SKIM Khairat Kematian/Family Bereavement Scheme The next of kin will receive RM 1,000 in the unfortunate event. The scheme will be valid from 1st of January 2018 to 31st of December 2018.

  • Children of approved BR1M recipients are eligible for Full National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN).

When is the BR1M payment disbursed?
The cash assistance is given out to households in three instalments – in February, June and August.
The first instalment payment for BR1M 2018 started on February 26, 2018 (Monday) and will be done in stages. Those who are eligible to receive RM1,200, the lowest income group, will be paid first, followed by the rest in the second and third stages.

How is the BR1M payment disbursed?

Successful applicants receive BR1M payment via:-

  1. Bank account - Those who have presented details of their bank account will have the qualified amount credited to their bank account.

  2. Cash vouchers  - Those without bank accounts will have their approval letters and voucher posted to them.  The voucher can be cashed at any Bank Simpanan Nasional branch. In order to cash the voucher, the recipient must present (i) original myKad (ii) voucher and letter of approval

There are five ways you can check the status of your BR1M application:-

  2. BR1M smartphone application (download at Play Store/App Store) 

  3. Call LHDNM at 1-800-88-2716

  4. Call MOF at 03-8882 4565/4566

  5. Go to the closest LHDNM branch 

Rejected BR1M Applications
According to the Ministry of Finance, in 2017 they rejected 600,000 BR1M applications whose salary exceeded the eligible monthly salary limit of RM4,000.  The BR1M Secretariat crosschecks with the other government ministries and agencies such as EPF and Inland Revenue Board on the information submitted by applicants.  


Some of the other common reasons for application rejection are as follows:

  • Incorrect information: (i) Information provided does not match with Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara (JPN) records (ii) Income exceeds RM4,000 according to records of other government agencies

  • Did not include information of spouse (for those who are married)

  • Both husband and wife made an application each

  • Incomplete documents as required for application

  • Recipient of Kad Diskaun Siswa 1Malaysia (KADS1M) do not qualify for BR1M 2018

  • Applicant works and resides outside of Malaysia

  • Other supporting documents (Certificate of marriage for married couples; as for single parents – Certificate of divorce, if a spouse has passed away, certificate of death. If the applicant has a business registered with Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia (SSM), confirmation or certificate that the business has ceased operations)

  • The latest mailing address of the applicant 

  • Latest banking information (Bank account Number under the applicant’s name.  It must be an account that is permitted to receive BR1M funds. No joint name, company, loan and other accounts are allowed)

  • Completed application form
